Summation Part 5: Research - Visual Language 5.0

This exercise I had to chose a name form a list of illustrators and analyse, descipe and talk about their work. I chose Peter Kuper an artist whose work often appears in The New Yorker and other magazines as well as book covers and written and illustrated every issue of 'spy vs spy' since 1997. His work is very varied, many styles and techniques are explored.

Here is a list of key words I'd use to describe what I think reflect the visual language in his commisioned work.

-Syombolic

-Colourful

-Wacky

-Political

-Detailed

-Expressive

-Versitile

-Busy

-Satire

A mixture of skecthbook work and commisions.....

Consider how they use media and mark making, whether their commissioned or professional work is political, dealing with issues, interpretative, reflecting narrative, informative, representational, decorative or stylised. Is it 2D or 3D or 4D?

I see in Kupers work he uses a mixture of mediums or techniques in his commissioned work as well as his sketchbook, everything is merges together with the smudged areas or light pencil lines or details like dots on the ground, washes for the sky. There’s emphasis on certain parts of his art with the use of outlines or again smudges. His work professionally is often used in places where political and current events are necessary such as The New York Times, Time, Newsweek, Businessweek, Mother Jones, The Progressive, Rolling Stone, Entertainment Weekly, and the New Yorker. His illustrations are usually also quite satirical or communicates and issue or an event in a clever humorous or quirky way like this one for example

Most of the drawings are relatively 2d and flat except for the ones where buildings and places or cities are being presented when perspective and angles of building are drawn. His style varies in being interpretive, representational, political act. The use of collage helps communicate all these themes as well as the mixture of medias.

Write a short statement, of no more than 200 words, to describe their work and visual language. What connections do you think exist between their sketchbooks and their creative identity or illustrative style?

Peter Kupers work is very adaptive in which he is good at many different styles and concepts sketchbook and professional. I see the connections in how similar the application of detail, each piece is made up of many different types of detail overlapping each other like a collage and as for the composition part of his creative identity is how involves direction changes and perspectives in his work, he intrigues the reader not only through using interpretive ideas and satire his detail in what seems unorganised composition is actually is perfect for intriguing a reader as there’s many parts of a drawing to look at and think about its meaning through is wacky art.
